Challenge
Automated Alerts and Mobile Incident Management in Critical Infrastructure
Flight operations at BER operate a large number of critical infrastructures with maximum availability in order to ensure uninterrupted flight operations with short turnaround times. This includes the baggage handling system in particular, but also passenger boarding bridges, the docking guidance system, the ground power supply, lighting, etc.
Initially, BER needed a solution to inform service technicians of malfunctions in the baggage handling system using automated alerts. The aim was to guarantee that the system could be rectified within 3 minutes.
Solution
Automated Alerts and Mobile Incident Management with SIGNL4
In Derdack, BER Airport found an established local vendor that was able to offer an innovative and powerful alerting system for critical infrastructures with SIGNL4.
The initial focus was on automated alerts for the baggage handling system. SIGNL4 was connected via an edge proxy to system’s control computer (PLC) via the S7 protocol. In the event of a fault, it can alert available technicians within seconds. The relevant messages and alarms are filtered out from a total of 18,000 different messages and alarms. The aim is for a technical or baggage-related fault alarm to be acknowledged within 1 minute and fault rectification to begin within 3 minutes. The use of smartphones with the SIGNL4 mobile app allows comprehensive information to be provided to the technician, including maps of the faulty components. If there is no acknowledgement within the required time, the alarm is automatically escalated to other people.
As the system has proved its worth, further infrastructures are gradually being integrated into the automated fault alarm system, e.g. the automatic docking guidance system.
Currently, 80 technicians in 10 maintenance teams are controlled by SIGNL4.
